Put your hands up if you like an organised pantry! Seriously, isn’t is so satisfying to have your food organised? Having a tidy pantry and keeping it free from ripped open plastic bags and containers can be a real challenge at times though. Something is constantly spilling or drying out because the packaging of most foods is just unpractical.
BUT worry no more, we have a few tips and trick how you can keep your pantry more organised and freer from unnecessary waste.
GO FOR GLASS
If you have the option go for food (like tempeh, tofu or nut butter) that are sold in a glass jar. After finishing the product, you can easily remove the labels by soaking the jars in warm soap water and reuse them to store your nuts, seeds, grains and dried fruit.
MAKE IT PRETTY
Label your jars so you can find everything more easily and so it looks nice too. If your pantry is nice to look at you will be even more motivated to keep it clean and tidy.
AVOID PACKAGED FOOD
Try to buy as much as you can without packaging. Some stores offer nuts, seeds and grains package free. Maybe you have the ability to shop at a local farmers market. Take your reusable bags to the store and refill your glass containers at home. It not only produces less waste, often this is a real money saver too.
BUY IN BULK
Buy legumes dry, not ready to eat. Chickpeas, lentils and beans can be bought dry and often they can be bought in bulk. This way you avoid packaging like metal cans you cannot reuse and it is less expensive. Soak your legumes in water overnight to have them ready to eat the next day. It is a little bit more effort but this way legumes are even better digestible for most people. A real win, win.
CHOOSE BRANDS THAT CARE
Buy products that come in biodegradable or reusable packaging. A lot of brand already make a big effort to make more sustainable packaging. Our bamboo straws and our coconut bowls are just two examples form our store. They come in a fully biodegradable and reusable packaging.
TAKE IT SLOW
Long lasting change is a continuous process and trying to do all of it at once can be overwhelming. So take your time. Try to implement one change at a time and make it fun for you. We all have a long way ahead of us regarding to low waste and becoming more environmental friendly. So take it one step at a time and don't stress. It is not a sprint it is a marathon. And most importantly, be proud of yourself for every change you concur.
